Put Your Mind To It, Go For It

Motivating Mantras

Posted on: May 13, 2010

I’ve been on a weight loss and healthy lifestyle journey for nearly 10 years now. I’ve had my ups and downs. I’ve given up, gained weight, started over, etc. But over the past 3 years I’ve finally figured it out. Sure, my weight fluctuates. I am not always perfectly within my weight watcher points. I will take a week off from exercise now and then. But I have been able to get back on track quickly when I start to fall off.

I have found that my weight loss success has come not from being perfect with calorie counting and exercise, but with the ability to dust off quickly and get back to it when I slip up. In order to get back on track with my tracking and activity, I have to get back on track mentally as well. In order to do that, I need to find motivation somewhere.

The same motivation that helps me to re-focus can help me when I start getting tempted to take a detour as well. I find that writing a list of the reasons I want to succeed reinforces my choices and is a great way to battle temptation. But, when that temptation comes out of nowhere, I need to be ready with an arsenal of motivation to battle against my lacking will power.

That’s where motivational quotes and mantras come in. When I’m feeling particularly weak, I will simply recite in my head “I am worth more, I am worth more.” Other times, I will remember a slew of quotes and phrases that my weight watcher leaders and friends have provided me over the years. These have all helped me in one way or another and I hope they will help you as well.

Feel free to share your favorites in the comments. I can always use to bulk up my brigade!

My favorite to get started:
“A year from now you could be glad you started or wish you had.”

For when I am alone and want to eat from boredom:
“What you eat in private shows in public.”

General Motivation:
“Nothing tastes as good as thin feels.”
“If hunger is not the problem, then eating is not the solution.”
“It’s not whether you get knocked down; it’s whether you get up.” ~Vince Lombardi
“Don’t dig your grave with your own knife and fork.” ~English Proverb
“We never repent of having eaten too little.” ~Thomas Jefferson, 1825

Just for sanity’s sake:
“You wouldn’t worry so much about what other people thought if you realized how seldom they do.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt
